世界那么大，文谷遇见你（九）An interview with foreign English teacher——Nanjie

Nanjie是一位非常优秀的外教老师，他能够以身作则，永远把积极向上的一面展现给学生们，Nanjie老师具备良好的师德和过硬的专业素质。

Question 1: Could you share with me more about your accomplishments, qualifications, and background as a teacher?

Academic:

I completed my Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree in Molecular Biology at the University of Exeter in 2009.

I have completed my 120-hour TEFL certificate and TKT Level 1 certificate.

Teaching background: 

I started working as a teaching assistant at a private school in the UK soon after my graduation. I have also volunteered to work as a youth leader in one of the deprived areas of my hometown in the U.K. In 2019, I began teaching English in China.

问题一：您能和我们分享一些您作为教师所具备的资质，专业背景及取得的个人成就吗？

学术背景：

2009年，我在英国埃克塞特大学完成了学业，获得分子生物学理学学士学位。

教学资历：

我拥有TEFL国际教师资格证书和TKT（英语教学能力）一级证书。

教学经验：

毕业后不久，我开始在英国一所私立学校工作，并担任助教的职务。我还主动提出在英国的一个贫困地区工作，担任青年领袖。2019年，我开始在中国教授英语。

Question 2: Where are you from? Why did you decide to reside in China? For how long have you been here?What is your favourite Chinese dish?

I’m from Exeter, a small city in southwest England, nestled in the heart of the beautiful Devon countryside, with stunning national parks and beaches nearby. I always wanted to be a teacher, and working in China has given me the incredible opportunity to positively impact students' lives, which I find highly rewarding. Helping Chinese students improve their English skills not only enhances their academic performance but also opens doors for them professionally, providing them with more opportunities for future success.

While studying in Exeter, I met my wife, who is Chinese. I moved to China in 2019 to be reunited with her, initially living in Jilin and later moving to Dalian. My favorite Chinese dish is Beijing Duck.

问题二：您来自哪里？您为什么决定在中国工作？您来中国多久了？您最喜欢的中国美食是什么呢？

我来自英格兰西南部的一个小城市埃克塞特，它坐落在美丽的德文郡乡村的中心，附近有优美的国家公园和海滩。从小我就立志成为一名教师，我非常珍惜做教师的时光和经历，能够帮助学生进步，我感到收获满满，并且觉得非常有意义。帮助中国的学生提高英语能力不仅可以提高他们的学习成绩，还可以为他们打开专业的大门，为他们未来的成功提供更多的机会。

在埃克塞特学习期间，我遇到了我的妻子，她是中国人。我于2019年搬到中国与她团聚。我们最初住在吉林，后来搬到大连。我最喜欢的中国美食是北京烤鸭。

Question 3: What made you decide to become a teacher? What lifelong learning outcomes do you hope your students will attain from you?

I have a soft spot in my heart for teachers; some of my family are teachers, and one of my science teachers at school really made a big impact on my life when I was a kid. This person has ignited my passion for learning and helped shape my character. I wanted to be able to have the same positive impact on others. Teaching also allows me to continuously learn and grow, which I find personally and professionally rewarding.

I want to instill in them a lifelong love of learning and curiosity that drives them to explore new ideas and continue growing throughout their lives, never being afraid to make mistakes. Additionally, I’d aim to help my students develop their communication skills, empathy and respect for others.

问题三：您为什么选择做教师？您希望学生能从您那里学到哪些受益终生的优秀品质？

我非常喜欢教师这一职业，我的很多家人都是老师。在我小的时候，我学校的一位科学老师对我的生活产生了很大的影响。他不仅点燃了我的学习热情，而且在我性格养成的过程中也起着的很大的引导作用，我也希望自己能够对他人产生同样的积极影响。同时，日常教学也促使我不断地学习和成长，让我自身也特别受益。

至于我的学生，我希望培养他们终身学习的能力，对学习的热爱和对一切未知事物的好奇心，促使他们不断探索新的事物，不怕犯错，勇于挑战。此外，我还希望能够帮助学生培养他们的沟通能力、同理心和对他人的尊重。

Question 4: What interests do you have? What do you typically do on weekends, holidays, and after work?

I have a variety of interests that keep me active and engaged. I enjoy watching sci-fi movies, which help me unwind and expand my knowledge. Thanks to my family, I am a huge Manchester United fan. I am also passionate about football. Additionally, I like to play video games and board games. I am also an animal lover. On holidays, I enjoy travelingand exploring new cultures and cuisines.

问题四：您有哪些个人爱好？您在周末、假期和下班后通常会做些什么？

我的个人兴趣爱好广泛，我喜欢看科幻电影，不仅能让我感到放松，同时也能扩展我的知识面。在我家人的影响下，我成了曼联的铁杆球迷，我也对足球充满热情。此外，我喜欢下棋，也喜欢各种小动物。在假期里，我喜欢旅行，了解不同的风俗文化和美食。

Question 5: How do you manage challenging tasks or setbacks at work?

I believe it is important to remain calm and collected when faced with challenges, and then analyze the problem. Once I have a clear picture, I will break down challenging tasks into smaller, more manageable steps. It’s helpful for me to list the pros and cons of my decisions. I believe in the power of collaboration. I’d seek wisdom and advice from more experienced teachers at work. Working together often leads to more effective solutions.

I understand that it’s vital to take time to reflect on my own experience at work and keep a positive attitude.

问题五：您如何面对工作中的挑战与困难？

我认为在面对挑战时先保持冷静，然后仔细的分析问题是很重要的。一旦我有了清晰的思路，我就会将具有挑战性的任务分解开，权衡好利弊后再找到解决问题的办法。我相信合作的力量，我会向工作中更有经验的老师寻求智慧和建议，我坚信合作往往会带来更有效的解决方案。

同时，我擅于反思，通过反思不断改进和调整进而取得更大的进步。

Question 6: If you could sum up teaching in one sentence, what would it be?

I like the quote that says, “Teaching is building the foundation for students’ future success by fostering curiosity, critical thinking, creativity and resilience.”

Teaching requires dedication and patience. I wish to influence my students to be curious and never be afraid to make mistakes on their journey of learning and self-discovery.

问题六：请用一句话概括一下您认为如何能够做好教学？

我喜欢这句话，“教学是通过培养学生的好奇心、批判性思维、创造力和韧性，进而为学生未来的成功奠定基础。”

教学需要奉献精神和耐心，我也希望通过我的引导，我的学生能够敢于挑战，不惧怕失败。

Question 7: What strategies do you use to manage your classroom effectively?

I believe that building a good relationship with the students is the foundation of classroom management. I talk to my students throughout the day about different topics they are interested in. Routines are also important to me. I start my lesson with clear expectations and rules. Since different people learn in different ways, I use a variety of teaching styles, such as visual, audio, and role plays, to accommodate my students. Last but not least, be consistent and persistent. I stick with my classroom rules every day.

 问题七：您通常使用何种策略来保证课堂的有序和高效？

我相信与学生建立良好的关系是课堂有效管理的基础，我每天都在和学生们谈论他们感兴趣的不同话题。我在每节课开始的时候都会和学生表达我的期望和课堂规则，因为每个学生的学情不同，我也会使用各种不同的教学手段，如通过视频、音频和角色扮演等活动来提高学生的课堂参与度和积极性。另外，我觉得坚持也很重要，我每天都会强调并坚持我的课堂规则。

Question 8: How do you keep your students motivated and interested in learning English?

During my lessons, I would encourage student-to-student and group activities. Make the contents relatable to the students. I would allow more students to talk and ask more open-ended questions. Positive reinforcement is also important; we should frequently celebrate students' progress in the classroom.

问题八：你如何让学生保持学习英语的积极性和兴趣？

在上课期间，我会鼓励同桌之间或小组之间进行活动，并设计与学生生活息息相关的话题和教学内容。我鼓励学生在课堂上多用英语进行表达，提出更多开放式的问题。另外，正面的鼓励和评价也很重要；我会经常且及时地赞扬我的学生在课堂上所取得的进步。

Question 9: Is there anything you would like to add or tell us about?

I enjoy working here at DVBS. We have a fantastic team. I appreciate the support and guidance from my colleagues and the managers.

我喜欢在大连文谷双语学校工作，我们有一个很棒的团队，我很感激身边的同事和领导对我的指导和帮助。

Question 10: Can you tell me the motto you prefer? (just like: No pain, no gain.)

I really like the phrase “keep calm and carry on.”

Here at DVBS, it's great to see how Nanjie delivers his classes with enthusiasm and professionalism. Nanjie is friendly and respectful to everyone. Nanjie is patient, approachable, and always willing to offer extra help to those who need it.

我很喜欢“保持冷静，继续前进”这句话。
